The job
strange companions and a stranger mystery

It all started simply enough. I took a job as a guard to help get a caravan from point A to point B. Simple enough. The pay was decedent, and the food was great. I was placed in a group with Qarle an odd Dragonborn fighter whose bullheaded and blunt attitude is likely going to get me killed. Still, I have a strange affinity for him and seem able to be able to converse with him in his native tongue? I need to explore this further as I’m sure I’ve never been to his homeland and can’t quite fathom how I can understand his native speech when the others cannot. I can only assume it is related to the strange manifestation of my powers.

Then there is Gerrak Firebeard, your typical surly dwarf with apparent beef over a missing family heirloom, Kaladious, a Tiefling Paladan who I was hoping would be more fun based on the horns, but seems to have the typical sword of great justice stuck somewhere up his asshole. Then there’s Zhony an odd wood gnome with the pension for dancing. I’m not sure about that one and have taken a note to shield my bung hole.

We started off on maybe the wrong foot and it got worse from there. We don’t seem to be getting along the best. There was almost a fight among us first thing which was luckily distracted by the gnome’s dancing and and a donation of brew on my part. I thought I could make friends with the rest of the guards given the beer I have unhand, but in a friendly attempt at sharing a keg I tripped over a root, flung the keg a good 10 yards and knocked out one of the other guards.

I thought that would be the worst of this journey. We later discovered a group of unknown travelers dead next to the camp. When we went to report our findings we noticed a strange figure in the distance, blacked out, and awoke with strange marks in our arms. All of ours are different, mine is a a clockwork gear. Qarle immediately cut his off, I was afraid the idiot would bleed to death right there. The rest of the guards were dead in the camp deserted. We quickly tried to asses the situation by taking stock of our cargo which is empty! None of this makes any sense. According to our Paladin these marks are supposedly related to a pantheon of Gods in his home city. We also discovered a bag of holding and a strange piece of material supposedly from a shrine to these gods located in his home city. These items were on the bodies of those killed who appeared to have been shadowing us.

For now we’ve decided to continue our journey to the nearest city where we’ll sell our wagons and then figure out how best to proceed.

Zhony - Companions

A monk needs friends right? A monk needs to eat right? I’m pretty sure about both of these questions. On my journey to LightFall, I was approached by a mysterious but friendly elf named Fenry. Fenry promised plenty food and company with other adventurers that he suggested would be worth my while to meet. The food sounded good and I would like some company. It has been a very long time since I have had conversation with others. It is time to kindle new friendships. My quest was never determined to be a solo affair. So on the plus side I “might” make some companions and on the down side my trip to Lightfall looks to be a circuitous route.

First off, the food is amazing. I have never eaten this well in my life. More food than I have ever seen in one place has been put before us. Even more surprising than the food is that I have also never seen anyone eat so fast or much as this fella named Qarle or anyone that has consumed so much drink in one setting as the sorceror that goes by the name Edge Stormblessed. The dinner was good and un-eventful but the after-dinner party around the fire turned out to be very eventful indeed.

The dwarf cleric that goes by the name Gerrak Firebeard started off with introductions. His demeanor is very gruff and straightfoward and eyes me strangely. He is on a quest concerning a family weapon. Next came Kaladious the tiefling Paladin. I like this guy. We have already become acquaintances on the road and I look forward to working with him. I see great synergy in our fighting styles. I also introduce myself but struggle with conversation. The lack of people to communicate with the last 5 years has left me lacking in people skills. Next is Quarle. This is where things get interesting. Quarle goes on to explain some of his background. It is during this explanation that Kaladious says the wrong thing and causes the Dragonborn to fly into a brief but wild rage. He punches Kaladious right in the face. I quickly react to this violence and break out in one of my dances learned in my years of entertaining peasants. This quickly distracts and calms the dragonborn. We continue to get to know each other when we overhear the other party of guards discussing something among themselves.

The party determining that we should investigate decide upon the route of sharing our drink. Unfortunately we task the drunk sorceror with bringing the booze over and he nearly kills the halfling by launching a keg straight to his dome. After this, they aren’t interested in anything to do with us and we retire back to our campfire.

Little beknowest to us we would never see that halfling alive again. There we screams and shouts and after investigating the other group of guards have been slain. When I say slain they were killed without a fight. There were tracks leading off to the North but we decided we were tasked with a job to protect Fenry’s wagons. We circled the wagons and waited and nothing happened until something happened. That something we are still not quite sure of. We all experienced a burning sensation and woke up branded in ink with the symbol of a god upon the inside of our forearm. Before we can even really discuss what happened the dragonborn aka “Crazy Quarle” whipped out a knife and cut the mark off and deftly tucked it in his pocket.

After searching the dead bodies of the guards and finding only a piece of something from a temple in Lightfall we head to the nearest town to gather our wits and prepare for what awaits.

It is in this small town we discover a decrepit temple dedicated to the same gods as the brands on our arm. Upon entering the temple we encounter a strange priest with his mouth stitched. Perhaps he the answers we seek.

Entry 1

A man named Fenri hired us to guard 4 caravans from Lightfall to Summerspell (A 6 day trip). Among the other guards there were some shifters and a Halfling. While in our group, I overheard them say “The borders are gone, but we still remain.” We were curious and went tp ask them what they were talking about. Edge was bringing over a keg as a peace offering when he accidentally dropped on the Halfling’s head, knocking him out cold. When he comes to, he is understandably upset but we offer to try again later that evening with another keg. As we about to head over, we see some shadowy figures come from the north and approach the other group. We head over to see who they are. When we arrive the guards are all killed and the mysterious figures had vanished. Nothing appeared to have been tampered with in the caravans but the crates are all empty. Fenri is nowhere to be found. We all agree to finish our journey to Summerspell in the morning. We select our night watchmen, of which I am one. During my shift I see a shadowy figure coming at me from a distance in the dark. I can’t make out who it is but they look ready to attack. I am able to knock them out. I went to check on my fellow guards only to find them bleeding out. I then go to check on Edge in the caravan. As I look inside I feel a burning sharp pain in my back, drift through darkness, and then see a bright light. When I wake, it is midday and I find my fellow guards also waking up. We are all fine, except we each now have a religious symbol tattooed on our right wrist. We each have a different religion, mine being the symbol of Pelor. Quarle then cut his off his wrist and carried it with him. While looking around we find a shard made of a material I am familiar with, as I had seen it on a statue in my hometown in the Church of the Unified Gods. This was in one of the dead guards pack. We decide to carry on to Summerspell, sell the caravans and keep the horses. We got to town and sold the caravans for 40 gold (Zhony declined his share). We then went to the Black Egg tavern for something to eat and drink. Edge gambles and loses some gold. As we figure out what we’re going to d, I try to unify our team on a direction. We decide we will try to figure what happened to us and what is going on. We also agree to assist one another on our own personal quests. We then decide to go to the local Church of the Unified Gods to see if we can get any info on the shard and our religious tattoos. We find a small rundown church with a priest with his lips sewn shut. We find it difficult to communicate, so Edge casts Friends on him to ask a question. Gerrak and I feel this is not a great idea and go outside the church. The spell was cast, the question asked and the priest ripped open his lips with a loud scream.
